Author | Who made it? The first item in nearly an citation style is the author or creator. In some cases, the citation may also include other contributors such as editors or translators. |
Title | What is it called? |
Date | When was it made? |
Container | Is it part of something else? Many sources are part of a larger work, such as a book chapter, an article in a journal, or an episode of a TV series. The larger work that holds the source is the "container." |
Version | Which version is it in? |
Publisher | Who made it available? The publisher is the organization responsible for making the work available to the public. The publishing company for a book can usually be found on the title page or copyright page. The publisher for a film or TV show may be the production company or distribution company. |
Location | Where can I find it? This part of the citation points the reader directly to the source location: for print sources this would mean page numbers, for other sources this may include a URL or DOI (Digital Object Identifier). |
